Fringe vs Pillow Talk

How are the sequences from “Pillow Talk” and Fringe different? Discuss the differences in pace and style of editing as well as the effect the editing has on meaning/the audience’s reception of the extracts?
The sequences from Fringe and Pillow talk are both very different and have different qualities that make them unique and individual.
Both extracts have differences in the pace of the sequences. Fringe has a much faster pace than Pillow Talk throughout and overall Fringe has more shots and shows faster cuts as it has a much more serious topic than Pillow Talk. This shows the serious tone of the sequence and the pace is fast in fringe and most of the cuts are straight cuts and the shot only lasts a few shots before it cuts again. The faster the shots the more intense the scene becomes. It wants the audience to have to pick up the information they are getting form the shot faster.  In contrast, Pillow Talk has much longer shots and straight cuts aren’t the only transition used to move from one shot to the other. Pillow talk has an average of 12 seconds for each shot. In Pillow talk there is a dissolve transition in the first shot into the second shot. This helps the audience realise there is a complete change of scene. A wipe is also used in pillow talk to show a phone conversation between the two people and how they are reacting form different places. The slow transitions slow the pace of the scenes down and the audience are relaxed. The quick change of shots in fringe speeds up the pace and gives the scene a serious tone.
In fringe the extract starts with extreme close ups which sets a very intense mood. Using an extreme close up lets the audience see the expression on the actors face much clearer and can understand the situation happening on screen. The extreme close up doesn’t let the audience establish where the scene is set, however, in Pillow Talk the extract starts with medium shots and long shots and this continues throughout. This always sets the scene and allows the audience to pick up more information by the actors surroundings. The shots in Pillow Talk are very clear and establish the setting much more than Fringe.
Pillow Talk comes across as being aimed at a much older generation than Fringe. Fringe has a much more modern setting than pillow talk and older people may be able to relate to pillow talk much more the Fringe. Pillow Talk appears to be set in the 1950s and the costumes and setting reflect this. The first shot in Pillow talk shown establishes this as the audience can clearly see the old fashioned manor of the house it is set. Pillow Talk comes across as a romantic film mostly aimed at girls and is a much classier film then Fringe. Fringe appears to be the complete opposite and is action packed and maybe what a boy might like to watch.
In Fringe there is much more camera movements in the shots than in Pillow Talk. Although neither of the extracts have any particular sudden movements. In most of the Fringe scenes the camera may move slightly in a particular direction to make the focus be on the subject they want it to. In shot 10 of Fringe the shot starts with the main actors pictured to the right side of a long shot. The camera slowly moves closer to them on the right side of the screen and the audience’s complete focus is on them.  In pillow talk the camera is mainly static but in the first shot there is a conversation and the camera moves in closer so the audience can focus on what they are saying and pick up the topic they are discussing.
The characters shown in each extract are very different. Fringe shows characters that appear to have importance and some position of power and authority. This is established in shot 4 when they are talking seriously and looking at each other on a screen. In contrast to this the characters in Pillow Talk appear to be carefree and relaxed. The characters in Pillow talk appear to be the stereotypical characters that are expected to be shown in this era. Doris day plays a very girly girl with perfect blonde hair and a high pitched voice. The male part in Pillow talk also shows a stereotypical side to him as he is crafty and plays the woman to get his own way. The editing of the shots within a scene can alter the way in which a particular character is perceived to the audience.  In fringe the audience have to pick up quickly what the narrative of the extract is because the shots are so fast pace. In Pillow Talk the narrative is easier to pick up because the pace is much slower and the topic is established early on.
Both Pillow talk and fringe are very different extracts as they have been edited and cut in different ways to allow the audience to create meaning and understand what is going on. The camera movement in both are used to focus the audience attention on someone or something. Pillow Talk shows setting first whilst Fringe shows emotion first. They both have different pace and a different effect on the audience. Both extracts are created for completely different audiences.

Harry Potter

Harry Potter Marketing

This is the new poster for the Harry Potter film. The poster has Harry as the main focus and then hermione and ron in the background. All of the characters are running , this draws the attention on the characters as the person looking at the poster wonders where they are running too. There is also the main title in the middle at the bottom of the page. just above it is the words "the end begins" , this gets the audience excited for a big finale of all the Harry Potter films. There is also the image of blood spattered across the poster this makes the audience wonder who blood it is and this sort of marketing will make the audience want to go see the film to find out the answer to their questions.

This is an image of a ring binder marketing the film. The person who would buy this product is most likely to go and watch the film. The main focus is on the image of Harry and Ron and they have faded out the image of hermione in the background.

This is a xbox game Marketing the film. the game doesnt giva any of the film away so it keeps the audience in suspense and makes them want to see the film more. The main focus is on Harry but then the audiences eyes are drawn to the large image over the title of voldermorts eyes. the image suggest that Harry is running away from voldemort this makes the audience want to go see the film to find out why.

This image is the front cover of a movie magazine called empire. This is good marketing because the magazines target audience is people who go and watch films. If they see the advertisment of harry potter on the front of the magazine then they will go and watch the film. Just like other marketing ideas , harry is the main focus.

This image is off two massive billboards in london advertising the new Harry Potter film. this is good marketing because people walking or driving past will notice the billboard and want to go see the film and know what it is all about.

This image is marketing the film well. the words "nowhere is safe" add suspense and excitment to the idea of going to see the film. the expression on Ron's face show that he is serious and shows a tense moment. The film is so well known so the person making the poster is able to shorten and abreiviate the main title. the poster expects the audience to know what the film is.

Harry Potter Deathly Hallows Mousepad

This merchandise advertises harry potter and when people buy it it is almost certainly going to make them want to see the film. the main image on the mousemat is harry.

Harry Potter Deathly Hallows Bag
This bag is a good marketising product because once the person has bought the bag they will want to see the film. they may also carry the bag around with them . This may cause others to see the image on the bag and recognise the image and then they may also go and see the film.

shot types

Panning shot

the camera stays in one place and twists to show the whole setting. its like a head turning to see the rest of the setting. when the camera rotates on the spot to allow the viewer to see the whole surrounding area. A panning shot would be good when following someone running or at the beginning of the scene to set it. The panning shot is normally used manually.

Tracking shot

This is when the camera moves and acts like a person. The camera will bob up and down if it wants to pretend to walk like a person would walk. It will move along side other characters. It is also known as a dolly. The camera makes the audience feel like they are in the eyes of a person .

Whip Pan
This is when the camera pans really quickly and then focuses on on particular image or structure. the camera will normally zoom in on the image. the camera pans really fast so that the audience cannot see the image until the camera has stopped. the camera can whip pan both ways left and right.

Reverse track

This is when the camera zooms out on the background but zooms in on a particular object. this shot puts all the audiences attention on the main object . it is normally used when something dramatic has just happened or a particular charcter need to be focused on. this shot builds tension in a scene.

Birds eye view

This is when the camera is really high up and is looking down from above. The objects in the shot should look very small and the shot is normally quite still and structured shapes. The shot is normmally used to show setting and surrounding areas. This shot can also be called a crane shot.

Worms eye

This shot is the complete opposite to a birds eye shot . the camera is looking straight up wards. the camera may not always move from the postition it is in. this shot would be used to show something in the sky or a person standing up and the camera looking at them from below.

Low angle

this is when the camera is down looking up at an upward angle at something or someone. this is used a lot on people to make them look larger .

Sherlock Holmes review

Sherlock holmes uses lots of special effects and clever camera tricks to help the audience understand characters. I thought that the film was very clever and enjoyable as it contained elements of a lot of different genres. I thought that it was eventful, funny, adventurous and dramatic. I thought that the effects used were very creative and used well.
Sherlock Holmes is directed by Guy Ritchie, it was released on the 26th December 2009. Guy Rithchie has directed many famous films such as Rocknrolla, Revolver and Snatch. When Sherlock Holmes was first released it had great reviews and most people responded well to it. the film showed a new twist to a new story. The film stars celebrities such as Robert Downey Jr. , Jude law and Rachel McAdams. The film is nominated for two oscars.
I really like the way slow motion is used during the fight sequence as it shows how the movement effected the apponant. There is also a part within the film where the characters jump over the camera the camera following them emphasises the sped in which the characters are going. Colour is used well in each scene and the audiences attention is always drawn to the main characters. the camera angles are extreamly appropriate and when the camera is looking up on the figure it creates a lot of tension.
I think that the film had a wide range of ages that are able to watch it. other people my age would like but also older people would like it aswell. i think that they have left the film in a good enough place that is they wanted to create a sequel they could. Overall, i really enjoyed the film and i think many other people, of all ages, will enjoy the film.
